Artists on Display
In the spring of 2008 Castle Building & Remodeling hosted 19 truly unique artists who displayed work in mediums that ranged from photography, sculpture, clay, iron, oil, tile, etchings, and stained glass. Their work was displayed during Art-A-Whirl a NE tradition that showcases a plethora of artists throughout NE. Their work was shown in Castle’s one of a kind showroom, office space, and court yard. Appetizers such as cheese, wine, and fruit were provided by Pop! a neighborhood restaurant. The event also served to raise money for two worthy charities. Many artists chose to donate a piece of art to be auctioned off in a silent auction to help benefit the charities. The first charity was a local remodeling charity, Rebuilding Together, who strives to preserve and revitalize homes and communities by completing remodeling projects for needy families. The second charity to benefit was the artists of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi who were devastated by hurricane Katrina. Look for more information about next years Art-A-Whirl plans at Castle.

Artist StatementAs an artist, I devote myself to exposing the beauty that exists all around us in the details of people and nature. Working in both color and grayscale, I attempt to bring out an aspect of my subject that may otherwise go unnoticed. In our fast-paced culture, our interactions with the environment and with other people are often rushed as we race through our days. I hope to create photographs that encourage viewers to slow down, step back, and take a long look at the natural beauty that surrounds us.
BiographyGretchen Wren is originally from Rochester, Minnesota and currently resides in North Minneapolis with her husband and two cats. She studied education and photography at the College of St. Catherine and is currently working in management while pursuing photography in her spare time. While enjoying photographing the intricate details of nature, she also specializes in portrait and wedding photography.

Heidi K. Henderson
Artist StatementI paint on reclaimed doors and pieces of wood, combining imaginary images conjured up in my mind with past and present thoughts, experiences and ideas, telling stories from my life. I work with oil colors to achieve layers of intense, saturated color, and intricate detail beneath the outermost surface. The wood grain and layers of paint guide me as I tell and retell the stories using botanical and bodily forms.
Through the utilization of digital scans of my original paintings, I have recently discovered and launched a line of exciting surface designs (Motifs™) that emerged from the layers, forms and colors present in my original works on wood. I strive to have my patterns printed locally on natural or recycled materials, thereby contributing to the betterment of our environment while offering a unique product to the upholstery and garment industries.

Artist StatementImagine a landscape: a forest of brilliant fall colors, a mountain stream surrounded by towering pines, a quaking stand of aspen, or a waterfall frozen in time. Now imagine these shades of nature recreated in glass, dancing with color, and assembled as if seen through a fractured lens. The leaded glass panels create an abstract collage, which at first glance appears as a myriad palette of colors and elusive forms, but upon closer examination are revealed as a landscape. My artwork is inspired by a love of architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie style, the Arts and Crafts Movement, the Impressionists, and even crazy quilts – a mix of tradition and history. Continually challenging myself to push the envelope of design, I incorporate unusual materials such as copper mesh or a unique glass and frequently mix techniques to add depth and texture. My signature, written in copper and fused between layers of glass, is placed in all of my work; sometimes hidden, and sometimes as an accent to the composition. Structure, design and exceptional craftsmanship are hallmarks of my work: my art will last for generations.
