Featured Carpet Product

Mohawk leads innovation in sustainable flooring with SmartStrand® carpet with DuPont™ Sorona® renewably sourced polymer. In a partnership with DuPont, this carpet exclusively offers fiber made with Bio-PDO™ (the key Sorona® ingredient), which is produced from corn sugar.

By utilizing this new ingredient, 37 percent of Sorona® is being made from renewable resources. This marks the first time that a luxuriously soft carpet offers durability and stain protection, while also making less of an environmental impact.

Why Is SmartStrand Environmentally Smart?
DuPont™ Sorona® plays a major role in the worldwide objective of a renewable economy and represents a new frontier in sustainability. This carpet is environmentally smart because:
  • The production of Sorona® polymer requires 30 percent less energy than the production of an equal amount of nylon.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions from the production of Sorona™ are 63 percent lower than nylon manufacturing.
  • This energy reduction results in approximately one gallon of gasoline saved per every seven square yards of carpet.

The superior stain resistance of SmartStrand® carpet is engineered into the fiber and will never wear or wash off, meaning consumers will never need to retreat the carpet with stain protectors after steam cleaning. And this engineered-in stain resistance reaches new levels of protection, allowing tough stains such as mustard, red wine, and cherry Kool-Aid® to be removed simply with warm water and a mild detergent, or with Mohawk FloorCare™ Essentials. The fiber even resists discoloration from bleach.
It goes without saying that SmartStrand can be found as a major component in inspired homes everywhere.

Featured Wood Flooring Product

Wood From The Hood produces high quality lumber and other wood products from the Twin Cities area "Urban Forest". By reclaiming trees in our local area, we can produce high quality products from a sustainable resource and take one more step towards environmentally sensitive building and remodeling.

Wood From The Hood offers custom kiln drying, and milling to your specifications in addition to stock lumber and flooring. Unique projects utilizing thick, thin, book matched and wide single boards are our specialty. Products from Flooring to millwork, furniture, mantles, picture frames, cutting boards and artistic wood crafting are only some of the uses for this rich resource that until recently, may have been in front of your home.

All of their lumber can be tracked to the zip code where it was harvested from. In special cases it can be tracked to a specific address.

Help to keep these trees "alive" by finding new uses for them. Their website is here to educate and inform as well as creating a market for this previously discarded but now rediscovered, resource.

Cork

Renewable, long lasting, great looking, soft, and warm on the feet are just a few of the reasons cork has been a popular flooring choice for generations. Stop in to see samples.

Featured Cork Product

Cork has been an integral part of social and economic segments of many societies for over three thousand years. Use of cork has been documented as far back as 3000 B.C. when Chinese fishermen used cork as floats. Throughout history, production methods and finished goods related to cork have changed, yet the raw material and harvesting practices have remained virtually unchanged. Throughout the world the cork forests span an estimated 5.4 million acres, with the concentration being in the Mediterranean region. The most predominant countries for cork production are Portugal (33%), Spain (23%) and Algeria (21%).

Cork is the bark of the Cork Oak tree. The tree, grown predominately in Europe and North Africa, has a life span ranging from 150-200 years. Cork is harvested using traditional methods that have remained virtually unchanged since the uses of cork were first discovered. Once the tree has reached the correct level of maturity (typically 25 years), the first harvest of cork bark is removed from the tree. The cork is removed by first making an incision using a sharp knife into the bark. After this incision is made, the cork is gently removed from the tree in sections approximately 1‘ X 3‘. The cork is then carried to a centralized location in the forest where it is stacked and aged for a period of 3-6 months. This process is repeated every nine years henceforth, at no time affecting the health of the tree. Hand labor is used throughout the entire harvesting process to ensure that the trees are properly treated and protected. During each harvest, no more than 50% of the bark is removed, allowing the tree to protect itself using its natural defenses. Chemical pesticides and fertilizers are not normally used in the cork forest.
