Back in 2012, owner Loren Schirber had one of his many great ideas. He wanted to host a home tour that is unlike any other home tour in the Twin Cities. In 2013, Castle hosted it’s very first home tour and has successfully hosted it’s own remodeling tour annual since then. Almost 100 homes have now been featured on the tour over the years, showcasing projects of all sizes, budgets, and aesthetics.

Check out the preview for 2019’s home tour:

The Castle Educational Remodeling Home Tour is designed to help people understand what a realistic remodel involves, as well as, but not limited to, what is achievable within their budget to create a project that provides both ROI (return on investment) and ROE (return on enjoyment). Because of the costs to remodelers to participate in other tours (about $1,000 – $2,700 per home) they tend to only show their largest and fanciest projects.

Our goal is to show more typical remodeling projects that the average family is more likely to complete.

This event is different because it is all projects completed by Castle. It is a weekend to showcase our best work to the public and educate them on our services. The weekend is also unique because, while it is designed to help inspire attendees for their future remodels, it is more importantly designed to educate attendees on their future remodel. We firmly believe in being upfront about all things, and this tour is a great way for us to showcase our honesty behind our work.

Educational topics included how to budget for your remodel, how to choose a contractor, when to spot a bad remodel/flip, using technology to plan your remodel, and more. Last here, we had a home that featured the topic of Working within your Existing Floor Plan. It can be a tough decision to take down walls vs utilizing the current frames.

The first home tour

The first tour in 2013 showcased an impressive twenty-four projects across the cities. When guests visited a home, they were greeted by one or two of our team members, sometimes a preferred trade partner, and a beautifully remodeled space. Guests had the opportunity to “check in” through our app, pick up educational handouts, and leave inspired. We handed out thousands of dollars worth of prizes (Grand Prize was $5000 to put towards a future remodel!) over the two day event. Overall, the inaugural event was a huge success. From an educational standpoint, we made it a priority to give our preferred trade partners and vendors a platform as well.  Many featuring products from our preferred trade partners and vendors. Our event success would not be where it is without their help, both within actual projects and behind the scenes at our events.

Looking ahead

Unfortunately, given the circumstances of 2020 happening locally and globally, we have made the tough decision to NOT host our Educational Home Tour this year. We are planning to host it in spring of 2021. This will allow more time for our team to plan and for our city to heal. The health and safety of staff, homeowners, and attendees is of utmost importance and we feel we can only do that by postponing this year’s event. In the meantime, you can head to our Instagram for a virtual throwback tour, showcasing some of our favorite past projects on the tour.
