Homeowner Involvement
A collaborative approach that balances savings, responsibility, and professional oversight.

How Our Homeowner Involvement Works
Although Castle encourages client participation, there are certain restrictions that have been enacted based on past negative experiences. In general, Castle most strongly encourages participation in the beginning and ending stages of the project. Here is an overview, broken down by category of work, of Castle policies on homeowner involvement.
This is an area that Castle does not allow homeowner participation. Castle’s system as a general contractor is built around pulling the permit and taking responsibility for all necessary inspections. Castle will work with client-provided architects and designers.
Many clients do tear out and demo and save thousands in labor costs. This is the first stage of the project and involves ripping out, smashing, and removing what will be leaving. This phase can be gratifying and tiring. Expect many trips to the dumpster and try to recruit some friends to help.
Excavation
Leave the digging to the pros. Heavy equipment is the way to go here.
Concrete
Concrete is better left to professionals who have specialized equipment.
Masonry
As one of the most skilled trades, masons are paid well for a reason. Their work is as much art as it is science. Masonry takes years to learn, and your home is not the ideal place to practice, as mistakes can remain visible for many years.
Floor Framing
Unless you have framing experience, this should be left to Castle. Framing requires knowledge of tools, attention to detail, comfort working at heights, and physical strength. It is also typically a two- to three-person job.

Roofing, Flashing & Gutters
Unless you are comfortable with heights and have significant free time, this is usually not worth doing yourself. Professional crews are fast and efficient, and many clients are surprised at how little they would actually save. If you have a trusted professional you would prefer to use, let us know.
Exterior Trim & Decks
Carpentry is our expertise, and we prefer to complete this work.
Siding

Exterior Doors & Trim
Carpentry is our expertise, and we prefer to complete this work.
Windows
Carpentry is our expertise, and we prefer to handle this critical element. Installation codes have become stricter to prevent moisture and mold issues. Proper flashing and installation techniques are essential and should be handled by Castle.
Plumbing
Castle requires that our plumber complete all plumbing work. Passing inspections involves complexity beyond most do-it-yourself projects. Because of the potential liability associated with leaks and failures, we rely on trusted professional partners for supply and installation to ensure clear warranty responsibility.
Heating & Cooling
This is a complex system that requires licensed professionals.
Electric
Like plumbing and HVAC, electrical work must be completed by professionals. Electricity presents serious safety risks and should not be handled by untrained individuals.
Insulation
Some insulation applications, particularly fiberglass batts, can be installed by homeowners. However, the time required compared to the relatively small savings often leads clients to leave this work to professionals.
Drywall
Drywall is not ideal for learning on your own home. It is messy, time-consuming, and requires significant experience to achieve a smooth, durable finish.
Tile & Stone
With training and the right tools, some homeowners have successfully completed tile work. It requires patience and precision. This can be an area to reduce costs, potentially saving a portion of installation expenses.
Millwork, Doors, and Trim
This is an area where Castle excels. Our craftsmen are skilled in matching trim and installing with precision. Some homeowners with experience and sufficient time choose to complete this themselves.
Castle typically manages this portion of the project. If you hire a separate professional, we recommend allowing us to oversee the final installation to ensure the finished appearance meets expectations.
Specialties
Many homeowners choose to handle specialty items themselves. This can provide savings by eliminating coordination and installation labor.
Floor Coverings
If you have the time and experience, this can be an opportunity to manage or install yourself. It does add coordination complexity, but we are flexible.
Painting & Decorating
This is often completed by homeowners who have the time. Be sure to account for preparation and masking, which require significant effort.
Clean Up and Debris Removal
If you are willing to maintain daily site cleanliness and move debris to the dumpster, you may be able to reduce costs in this area.
