HOW DO I START THE REMODELING PROCESS?

When it comes time to remodel your home, the most important decision you will ever make will be deciding with which remodeling contractor to work. It’s important that you find an experienced contractor who is licensed, insured, and has a good reputation. Ask for references from past clients and be sure to contact them. Most clients will be happy to share their opinions and experiences with you. Castle Building & Remodeling has become an industry expert and our team frequently speaks on the topic of choosing a remodeling contractor. Castle has compiled an article of 25 considerations when choosing a remodeling contractor.

Here is a comprehensive document that Castle has created to help homeowners in the process of interviewing Castle and other contractors.

WHAT IS THE REMODELING PROCESS?

The remodeling process can vary immensely depending on the type of project you’re thinking of doing, but the process is similar among most projects. Castle Building & Remodeling is a Design/Build remodeler, which means that we can do the design, estimating, and construction of your project all in one process.

Your remodeling project begins with an idea of how you can change your home to fit you and your family’s needs in a better way. Perhaps your kitchen is just too small to fit your needs, or a new three-season porch and deck would be a great way to capture that scenic view from your backyard. Whatever the case may be, now is the time to talk to a professional to get an idea of your design options and budget. At this point, you’ll want a remodeling contractor to visit your home to discuss the possibilities.

The next step is the most exciting and fun part – exploring the design possibilities. A good designer will listen to your wants and needs and then come up with a variety of design concepts to respond to your goals. These design concepts (along with budget estimates) will continue to be refined until a final design is created.

Next, the construction process will begin. After the remodeler gets a construction permit from your city, the demolition of existing spaces (when necessary) will begin. Once all demolition has been completed, the new construction will start. Sometimes, as in the case of an addition project, the addition will be constructed before removing an exterior wall so that the inside of your home will never be exposed to weather. During construction, the remodeling contractor will organize the various trades (electrical, heating and air conditioning, plumbing, etc.) so that they come in at the right times to perform their work.

As the construction process nears a close, it’s a very exciting time, because your project has taken shape and is almost ready for you to move in. At this point, the remodeling contractor will walk the jobsite with you to create a final punchlist of items that must be completed. Once those tasks have been addressed and the construction is completed, you’ll be ready to enjoy your new space.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO REMODEL MY HOME?

This is a very common question, and can be the most difficult one to answer. The length of construction time can vary greatly depending on the size and scope of work to be completed. Here are some general estimates for “middle of the road” sized projects:

Kitchen and Bath Remodel: An average kitchen and bathroom remodel usually takes about two months.

Basement/Attic Finishing: Depending on the level of finish and size of your basement, it’s best to expect your remodel to take about 6-12 weeks.

Home Addition: Depending on square footage, a simple living room addition or 4-season porch takes about two to three months. This can vary greatly depending on if you’re thinking of adding a full basement underneath the addition.

Screen Porch and Deck Addition: When adding a new screen porch and deck, you can expect the project to last three to six weeks.

Whole House Remodel: When making a major addition and re-doing most of the house, the project length can vary greatly. Most projects of this nature take 3-5 months to complete from start to finish.

Remember, these are only rough estimates and will vary depending on the specific details of your remodel and existing conditions.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A MAJOR HOME REMODEL?

There are a variety of ways to invest in your home, and countless reasons to do so. In our 30-plus years in the remodeling business, we’ve seen why our clients have chosen to remodel their homes in lieu of moving. Here are some of the reasons they’ve mentioned to us:

“We love our neighborhood/neighbors.”
“The location is perfect for work, life, and our daily activities.”
“Our children are well established in the school system.”
“We’ve looked at new construction and have realized that there is more value in staying and remodeling.”
“We love the charm and character of our older home”.

WHAT IF REMODELING ISN’T RIGHT FOR ME?

Is home remodeling the right choice for you? This is a very important question to ask yourself before starting down the path of a remodel.

Home remodeling is not right for everyone, and Castle Building & Remodeling understands. Sometimes it makes more sense to move to a new home and that is why we started Save A Castle. Our mission is to buy, remodel, and return Castles to their former glory and make them ready for the next 80 years. Save A Castle is different from most house flippers. Save A Castle actually likes to work with clients and offers Interior Design services. Most flippers don’t want to deal with clients. Save A Castle thinks long term and tries to choose high quality finishes that will last.

If you have decided that moving is the right choice for you check out homes that Save A Castle is currently working on at our website. We focus on the middle real estate market, with homes typically selling between $250,000-$550,000.

If you are interested in purchasing and customizing one of the homes in progress please contact Loren Schirber at 612-877-8375.
